Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a non-profit prevention program that uses an interactive psychology-based curriculum and running to encourage pre-teen girls to develop self respect and healthy lifestyles.
The after-school program addresses all aspects of a girl's development including her physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual well-being. The weekly lessons, along with physical activity, are aimed at providing the tools girls need to avoid risky adolescent behaviors such as drug and alcohol use, early sexual activity, eating disorders and obesity.
Girls on the Run is the first of an entirely new genre of recreation programs. It combines physical training for a non-competitive 3.1 mile running event with warm-ups, team-building activities and workouts that focus on character-building, practical life skills. These skills include how to get along in a group, how to assert yourself in a healthy manner, how to stop a gossip chain and how to combat the negative and unattainable images young girls see in the media.
Girls on the Run Dane County is an Affiliate of Girls on the Run International, which has a network of over 160 locations across the United States and Canada.
Our Vision To help girls and women in Dane County feel good about themselves and their roles in society, we will provide access to a GOTR program to every 3rd through 5th grade girl in her community by 2020.
