Q:
A: Girls on the Run (GOTR®) is a non-profit prevention program that uses an interactive psychology-based curriculum and running to encourage pre-teen girls to develop self respect and healthy lifestyles.
The after-school program addresses all aspects of a girl's development including her physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual well-being.
Twice weekly lessons along with physical activity are aimed at providing the tools girls need to avoid risky adolescent behaviors such as drug and alcohol use, early sexual activity, eating disorders and obesity. |
Q:
A: Yes and no. Girls on the Run includes running — or walking, skipping and anything in between — but we are SO much more than a running program!
Girls on the Run is the first of an entirely new type of recreation program that combines physical training for a non-competitive 3.1 mile running event with warm-ups, team-building activities and workouts that focus on character-building practical life skills, all age-appropriate to 3rd-5th grade girls. Some skills include how to get along in a group, how to assert oneself in a healthy manner, how to stop a gossip chain and how to combat the negative and unattainable images young girls see in the media. |
Q:
A: GOTR is not affiliated with the Madison School District, but we are affilitated with various Madison area Community Centers and other schools and school districts thoughout Dane County. Please see our Program Info tab for complete site listings. |

Q: How do I register my daughter for GOTR?
A: Registration opens approximately one month before each season starts.
Fall 2009 registration will open August 1, 2009.
Online and paper mail-in registration are accepted, however, enrollment is limited and granted on a first-come, first-served basis, so online registration is recommended.
Please check the Program Info tab for complete program site and registration information. |
Q:
A: Yes, but each site has a limit of 15 girls in each group who are accepted on a first come, first served basis. An additional benefit of participating in Girls on the Run is meeting new friends. |
Q:
A: Girls should wear or bring comfortable, weather appropriate clothing that can be worn for warm ups, running, cool downs and sitting on the floor. Please also ensure that your daughter has appropriate footwear, including socks and running shoes. Girls should bring their water bottle (provided at the beginning of the season by GOTR) so they remain hydrated throughout the session. Depending on the time the session starts, girls should eat a light meal or healthy snack before they come. |
Q:
A: Our goal during each session is to motivate girls to be physically active, interact with the other girls in the program and talk about what's on their minds.
We encourage girls to get moving and help them build up to being able to participate in a 5K run at the end of the program. Girls can walk, skip, or run as long as they keep moving! During each session, we start with a warm-up, move on to an activity designed around moving and running, and then during the cool down period the coach leads discussions with the girls, covering the topic of the day. |
Q: Is your New Balance Girls on the Run 5K run open to the general public?
A: Yes! Our fall season-ending New Balance Girls on the Run 5K run will be a community event, celebrating physical activity and our fall 2009 GOTR participants' many accomplishments. Held on November 14, 2009 at the Waunakee Village Center, this fun run will be open to the public. We hope that family, friends and community supporters will come out to run, walk, or simply cheer the girls on along the race course!
Please see our New Balance GOTR 5K tab for complete race and registration information. We hope to see you there! |
