Help us make a difference in girls' lives!
|
Our vision is to make Girls on the Run available to all girls in Dane County by the year 2020 with the help of interested parents and coaches in new communities. We plan to add new program sites each session.
If you live in Dane County and would like to have an after-school or early evening program site in your community, you can help make that happen by doing the following:
- A site liaison (role description below)
- A safe, dedicated location (such as a community center or school gym) to hold a 1.5 hour program two days a week for 12 weeks in the spring and 8 weeks in the fall. The site does not have to have a track for running. A field or park is fine. However, enough space to measure off part of the area for occasions when lessons include running a certain distance such as a mile or 5K is required.
- A rain site such as an indoor, private gym reserved for Girls on the Run and not in conflict with other programs.
- A community partner such as a community center or school to assist with recruitment of girls and to ensure the longevity and sustainability of the program.
- A plan for identifying participants (3rd - 5th grade girls).
- Completed registration forms for at least 8 to 15 3rd - 5th grade girls to participate on a team. Some sites may be approved for multiple teams as long as each team has its own coaches and a separate space for activities.
- Minimum of two coaching candidates per team (8 - 15 girls) for your site. Each coach is required to attend one day of Girls on the Run training before the program starts and be certified in first aid and CPR. Head coaches must be available for two sessions per week, assisant coaches may share duties. Girls on the Run will assist you in identifying coaches when necessary.
- Verified support from the school principal or site director.
- Secure storage area for shoes, backpacks, etc.
Each site receives training, program curriculum and necessary supplies, hand-outs, water bottles, practice 5k snacks and day to day support from Girls on the Run of Dane County.
- Complete site application; gain signature of principal or director of community agency, in support of hosting. Download site application here
- Secure bi-weekly practice space for GOTR for 1 1/2 hours, two days per week for each team — indoor and outdoor.
- Identify storage space for GOTR supplies (snacks, shoes, folders, etc.)
- Assist in the recruitment of coaches for the site (two per team).
- Attend informational meeting scheduled by GOTR of Dane County.
- Distribute registration materials to third through fifth grade girls (2nd - 4th if distributing in the spring for the fall session).
- Collect registrations, review for accuracy and complete check-list to verify completion of information on registration forms; follow-up with families if necessary. Online registration is also available.
- Assist with participant data entry when necessary.
- If multiple teams at the site, assign girls to teams and provide GOTR staff with team rosters.
- Meet with coaches one time prior to the start of the season.
- Provide occasional feedback to GOTR of Dane County.
- Pick up program supplies and distribute to the coaches.
- Maintain regular communication with coach regarding program and facility.
- Identify language barriers, notify coordinator when assistance is needed.
- Attend at least one on-site GOTR practice.
- Liaison would generally not also be a GOTR coach
