MADISON, WI — October 24, 2006 — Girls on the Run of Dane County, an after-school program for 3rd through 5th grade girls, launched a $100,000 fundraising campaign today entitled "Shattering the Glass Slipper." The campaign relies on the power of woman-to-woman communication to drive donations.
"'Shattering the Glass Slipper' embodies the goal of Girls on the Run — to empower young girls to challenge society's vision of what they should look like, be or do with their lives," said Julia Stanley, Council Director for Girls on the Run. "Media images of skinny, beautiful models and stereotypes of women's roles often confuse girls' sense of self during adolescence. We want girls to learn early — before they become teenagers — that they should respect and feel good about themselves regardless of what they look like, who their friends are or how much they weigh."
The funding received from the "Shattering the Glass Slipper" campaign will enable the program to expand to more sites with a goal of providing access to all girls in Dane County by 2020. Currently, Girls on the Run of Dane County serves 64 girls at five sites throughout the county. Spring programs begin in March.
"Every woman or girl who hears about our program loves it, but we need more money to move our two-year-old organization to the next level of service," said Heather Clefisch, Board Chair for Girls on the Run. "We're depending on every woman who hears about 'Shattering the Glass Slipper' to make a donation and then pass on the message to other women."
Each 12-week session of Girls on the Run culminates with the girls participating in a 5K walk/run. The program is delivered by trained volunteer coaches and addresses all aspects of a girl's development including her physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual well-being. The twice-weekly lessons are aimed at providing the tools girls need to avoid risky adolescent behaviors such as drug and alcohol use, early sexual activity, eating disorders and obesity.
